Dr. Timnit Gebru, Founder and Executive Director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR), was the recipient of the 2025 Miles Conrad Award, NISO's lifetime achievement award for those working in the information community. Her presentation served as the closing keynote for the sixth annual NISO Plus Conference, held on-site in Baltimore, MD from February 10 - February 12.
Dr. Gebru's talk centered around the importance of community involvement in AI-related research. Whether we're discussing potential harms, societal impact, or the evolution of AI systems, Dr. Gebru strongly emphasized the need for all AI research to be rooted in the community.

Prior to founding DAIR, Dr. Timnit Gebru was co-lead of the Ethical AI research team at Google, where she was fired in December 2020 after raising issues of discrimination in the workplace.
