SAGE Publishing and Council of Australian University Libraries reach new “Read and Publish” agreement

SAGE Publishing and the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL), the negotiating body representing universities in Australia and New Zealand, have announced a new Open Access Agreement which will expand publishing opportunities for ANZ researchers. The three year agreement, which begins on the 1st January 2023 and will last through to the 31st December 2025, provides researchers with:
- Unlimited open access publishing rights in SAGE’s 900+ hybrid journals.
- A discount on article publishing charges for SAGE’s 150+ pure Gold Open Access journals.
Researchers at member institutions will have access to SAGE’s vast collection of journals in the social and behavioral sciences, and growing quality STM research portfolio. With the help of SAGE’s Open Access Portal, a platform dedicated to supporting OA workflows, authors will benefit from a seamless experience that guides them through licenses and streamlines the OA publication process.

Emory University joins HELIOS; Emory Libraries’ Lisa Macklin will serve as representative

Emory University has joined the Higher Education Leadership Initiative for Open Scholarship (HELIOS), a collective launched in spring 2022 to advance and promote open research. Associate vice provost and university librarian Lisa Macklin will serve as the Emory representative.
More than 80 colleges and universities that are committed to advancing open research and scholarship have become HELIOS members to date, including Duke, Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Purdue, Stanford and Yale universities and the University of Georgia.
The University of Pennsylvania Libraries Acquires Archives of The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Academy of Music

Two iconic Philadelphia institutions are teaming up to provide public access to an extraordinary historical collection. The University of Pennsylvania Libraries has acquired the archives of The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Academy of Music in an agreement that will facilitate research and access to more than a century of Philadelphia’s rich musical history.
“These archives are an invaluable resource for scholars and a treasured part of the cultural life of the city of Philadelphia,” said Penn President Liz Magill. “Through this unique partnership, Penn is helping to preserve these materials and provide access that will spur new research in music, history, architecture, and other fields. We are honored to have the Penn Libraries serve as home to these important historical treasures.”

Brent Reidy Named NYPL's Mellon Director of Research Libraries

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is pleased to announce that it has named Brent Reidy its Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Research Libraries. Reidy served as the Library’s interim director since April of this year, following the retirement of William Kelly, the former Mellon Director. Reidy’s tenure will begin immediately.
Reidy will be responsible for NYPL’s world-renowned public research centers, which includes the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, and the Yoseloff Business Center. The research centers encompass 460 staff members, 47 million collection items and 4 million annual visitors. His purview includes collection strategy, acquisition, preservation, and access, while also serving as a national voice on the direction of humanities research.
Lauren Di Monte named to new Yale Library leadership post for research and learning

Lauren Di Monte, associate dean for Learning, Research, and Digital Strategies at the University of Rochester, will join Yale University Library in March in the newly created position of Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning. Di Monte will be responsible for bringing together and building research services and expertise across all disciplines, and for collaborating with campus partners to provide a new level of research support across academic disciplines.
“Lauren has a history of taking on new challenges, breaking new ground, and supporting the research enterprise with collaborations across campus,” said Barbara Rockenbach, the Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian. “Her ability to connect our current services with newly imagined services will be key to the success [of] the library’s contributions to Yale’s research enterprise.”
Prom Named Interim Dean of Libraries and University Librarian

Christopher Prom has been appointed to serve as the Interim Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Dean of Libraries and University Librarian (Designate) pending approval by the Board of Trustees.
Professor Prom takes on this role after John P. Wilkin stepped down on November 30, 2022. The search process to recruit the next permanent dean is in its final stages. A new dean will be announced early in the spring semester. Professor Prom has agreed to serve in this interim role until the next dean’s appointment begins.

Taylor & Francis Signs Accessible Books Consortium and Publishing Accessibility Action Group Charters

Taylor & Francis, one of the world’s largest publishers of academic books and journals, has reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to accessibility by signing the Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) and Publishing Accessibility Action Group UK (PAAG) charters.
The objective of the ABC Charter for Accessible Publishing is “to make e-books accessible to all” by asking publishers to focus on implementing a range of practical steps. Taylor & Francis already meets all eight commitments set out in the Charter, which include publishing an accessibility policy, technical training for staff, incorporating accessibility features within digital publications, and providing a point of contact to assist people with print disabilities.
Building Digital Research Tools for Open Access to Canada’s Historical Topographic Maps and Data

The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) is pleased to announce the Historical National Topographic System (NTS): 1:50,000 Scale Maps, Data, & GIS, a new Open Access geospatial data collection of over 6000 Canadian maps that all researchers can discover, explore, and analyze.
This map series stretches across Canada and across time, covering the period of 1948 to today, providing an invaluable record of changes to the natural and human geography of the country. Digitization for a large portion of the series was recently completed by the McGill University Library and released as part of the online Canadiana collection. The current project builds on this series, transforming the maps into an open geospatial data resource available on the Borealis and Scholars GeoPortal platforms.

Clarivate Expands Real World Data and Analytics Solutions with Addition of U.S. Specialty Pharmacy Data

The new U.S. dataset will expand the real world data and analytics offerings from Clarivate. Researchers can access an in-depth view of high-cost medications and valuable insights into the patient’s treatment journey in chronic, complex and rare diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (e.g., Humira, Enbrel), inflammatory conditions (e.g., Dupixent, Otezla), and cancer (e.g., Xgeva, Xeloda).
Specialty drugs cover at least 20% of the market for chronic, complex and rare diseases. However, conventional claims data warehouses rarely include these high-cost medications, which limits the research potential of numerous diseases.

Oxford University Press signs the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment

We are pleased to announce that we have signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which is a worldwide initiative that recognizes the need to improve the ways in which scholarly research is evaluated. In signing the declaration, we are demonstrating our support for the responsible assessment of individual scholarly research outputs on their own merits. This further reflects our commitment to work towards a fair and effective research ecosystem.
For us at OUP, recognizing the value and impact of individual research contributions is a principle that we have long committed to implementing. In addition to joining community initiatives, such as DORA, we are a participant in the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC) which enhances the discoverability and use of scholarly citation data to support the assessment of the impact of research.
