STM Releases Recommendations for Classification of AI Use in Manuscript Preparation

September 2025
In 2023, the International Association of Science, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM) published guidelines for the use of generative AI in the publication process. Building on that work, they have now released suggested classifications for author use of AI—from text generation to data visualization—in academic writing. The purpose of the recommendations, developed by an STM Task and Finish Group, is not to set one policy for publishers, but to help them develop their own policies for the disclosure of AI use in manuscript generation.

New on The Scholarly Kitchen: Classifying AI Use in Manuscript Preparation – A Recommendation STM’s final framework is here: 9 recommended classifications of AI activities to support transparency & #researchintegrity. scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/09/23/g... #scholarlycommunication

The new recommendations may be downloaded on the STM website. For additional information, a recently published post on The Scholarly Kitchen blog by Henning Schoenenberger (Springer Nature), Kiera McNeice (Cambridge University Press), and Joris Van Rossum (STM) offers further details on the development of the recommendations.
