Rethink Research in the Age of AI with NISO’s Upcoming Training Series

September 2025
Course Facilitator, Cynthia Hudson Vitale, Associate Dean for Technology Strategy & Digital Services, Johns Hopkins University

Artificial Intelligence is no longer on the horizon. It is here and increasingly shaping the way research is written, reviewed, and shared. In response, nearly everyone in scholarly communication is now exploring AI tools and navigating emerging policies. But organizations differ in their stage of adoption, their goals, and the resources they bring to the table. Launching next month, a new NISO training series, AI Essentials: From Tools to Strategy, provides a space to reflect on where you are, learn from peers, and plan next steps.

The training series offers a program to help you not just keep up, but move forward with clarity and purpose. Registration is now open, with group discounts and early bird rates available through September 21. Beginning Thursday, October 9, 2025, the eight-week program will examine how AI continues to transform the research ecosystem and what organizations can do to prepare. Each 90-minute session will connect the big-picture issues such as integrity, governance, infrastructure, and long-term planning with practical steps institutions and organizations can begin implementing right now.

The program goes beyond simply helping participants learn how to use AI tools. It also addresses the responsibilities that come with working in environments where others may look to you for guidance, whether or not you are in a formal leadership role. For example, sessions will tackle integrity concerns such as research fraud, bias, and transparency (Session Two: Integrity in an AI Era), as well as practical applications like metadata enrichment and repository integration (Session Four: AI in Scholarly Workflows and Infrastructure). The series blends strategy with real-world examples, helping participants build their own skills while supporting colleagues, teams, and institutions in thoughtful, informed ways.

Facilitating the series is Cynthia Hudson Vitale, Associate Dean for Technology Strategy & Digital Services at Johns Hopkins University. With a career at the intersection of scholarship, technology, and policy, Hudson Vitale brings both vision and practical experience. She is also coordinating and moderating NISO’s September webinar, AI & the Research Cycle (Phase III: Writing, Peer Review & Publishing), offering a preview of themes that will be explored in greater depth during the fall training series.

Guest speakers from publishing, libraries, and research will join throughout the series, adding diverse experiences that sharpen the conversation around AI’s challenges and opportunities. Sessions will be held weekly on Thursday, October 9, 16, 23, and 30; November 6, 13, and 20; and Thursday, December 4, 2025. Be sure to register by September 21 for the best rates!
