A Deep Dive: Driving Change in Scholarly Communication

March Webinar to be Followed by an In-depth Training Series in June

Innovation in scholarly communication often comes from community-driven solutions, and we’re excited to offer two opportunities to dive into this important topic. Join us for Secrets to changing behaviour in scholarly communication, a webinar happening on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm ET, and follow it up with the June training series by the same name.

The webinar, led by Jennifer Gibson, Executive Director of Dryad, will explore practical strategies and tools for sparking meaningful change in research, publishing, and data management. It’s a chance to learn about the principles of community engagement and hear how they’ve been applied to real-world challenges.

The June training series–taking place on Thursdays from June 5 - June 26– deepens understanding of the topic a step further, focusing on the science of behavior change. Secrets to Changing Behavior in Scholarly Communication introduces the concept of social marketing—a framework adapted from public health to encourage new habits and behaviors. During four weekly 90-minute sessions, participants will learn how to:

  • Spot opportunities to influence behavior.
  • Create messages that resonate with specific audiences.
  • Build and execute effective outreach programs.
  • Track and improve program outcomes.

Jennifer Gibson brings deep expertise to the table, with leadership experience at eLife and SPARC, and a track record of delivering this course through FORCE11 and other venues. The series will also feature case studies highlighting successful community interventions, from open access to collaborative projects.
