NISO’s monthly interview (February 2020) is with Thomas Padilla, author of the recent report commissioned by OCLC, entitled Responsible Operations: Data Science, Machine Learning and AI in Libraries.
The report represents an agenda for libraries thinking about moving forward with these technologies. What makes it worthy of note is the recognition by its author that successfully doing so requires a holistic approach in considering and managing use as an institution moves to establish new policies, roles, and workflows.
Listen to this twenty minute conversation between Padilla and Jill O'Neill, Director of Content, NISO as they discuss what's meant by the concept of responsible operations, what skill sets may be demanded of information professionals in the coming years and some of the ways in which artificial intelligence may be put to use in the 21st century library.
