AI Technology Is Moving Fast. Catch up with AI Essentials: From Tools to Strategy!

AI technology is likely to remain a topic of debate and discussion for libraries, publishers, researchers, and others for well into the foreseeable future. Although AI is currently in use throughout scholarly communications, many are still grappling with decisions about how best to use it and how to support others—staff members, researchers, or students—in using it ethically. Our upcoming training course, launching on October 9, offers a unique opportunity not just to learn more about the latest tools and trends, but to acquire the insights needed to formulate an effective AI policy.
AI Essentials: From Tools to Strategy is an eight-week series designed and led by Cynthia Hudson Vitale, the Associate Dean for Technology Strategy & Digital Services at Johns Hopkins University. It begins with a discussion of AI core capabilities and explores the growing ecosystem of AI tools and services. Subsequent sessions consider some of the opportunities and challenges posed by AI technology: the risks to research integrity, copyright and licensing issues, and the adoption of AI in workflows and infrastructure.
With this foundation, participants can then consider how to approach AI in their workplaces, e.g., guiding researchers and staff in the responsible use of AI and developing strategies for assessing risks, opportunities, and organizational readiness. In the final session, they will build their roadmaps, outlining short-term steps for piloting, aligning, or scaling AI work in their own organizations and sharing plans with peers for feedback.
Participants in AI Essentials will leave the course ready to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape with confidence. Sessions happen on Thursdays from at 11:00 am–12:30 pm Eastern starting October 9, so register soon! Discounts are available for NISO members and groups.
