Earlier this year, three authors sued the AI technology company Anthropic, which had used their content to train its large language model, Claude. In that case, US District Court Judge William Alsup ruled that using the authors' work for this purpose did not violate fair use; however, he stated that the authors did have a case against Anthropic for ingesting pirated copies of their works.

The authors responded by bringing a new suit against Anthropic and having it certified as a class action, which permits millions of authors to pursue compensation as well. Anthropic appealed the certification, but on August 26,  the company agreed to settle the case. The lawsuit raised alarms in the tech industry, as the financial impact of the class action could be enormous.
