If your work involves the conservation of tangible cultural heritage, join us next month for a public webinar update on ISO TC 349.  You’ll learn about the goals of this ISO Technical Committee, NISO’s role in its US Technical Advisory Group, and how you can help ensure that our position on this important topic reflects the needs of the US cultural heritage community.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) formed TC 349 in 2024 to develop standards for terminology, technologies, and materials and equipment for the monitoring, evaluation, preservation, and restoration of cultural heritage. The committee’s work is focused specifically on the conservation of tangible objects and excludes the preservation of cinematography, photography, and content covered by the work of the ISO Technical Committee on Information and Documentation (ISO TC 46). NISO has now been appointed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to manage the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC 349.

On Thursday, February 27 (1:00–2:00 pm), we will host a free public webinar on NISO’s role in the ISO Standards development process and opportunities to participate as members of the TC 349 TAG, which will ensure that US perspectives are represented in discussions about setting world-recognized standards, from conservation terminology and basic principles to seismic protections and exhibition environments. The event is free and open to the public, but please register to attend.

We hope you’ll take this opportunity to learn and shape the US contribution to this important ISO Technical Committee! We encourage all those working for libraries, museums, or other institutions invested in tangible cultural heritage to register for this free event.
