JATS-Con To Be Held Adjacent to NISO Plus 2025
What's Happening Here?
Next year’s JATS-Con, the user conference for the Journal Article Tag Suite Standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2024), will be held as a pre-conference day associated with the annual NISO Plus Baltimore meeting on February 10, 2025 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. This is the first JATS-Con since 2023 and the first to be held in person since 2019.
The Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) is an XML format used to describe scientific literature published online. First published by NISO in 2012, the standard built on the work of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and was popularized by the NLM’s PubMed Central as a de facto standard for the interchange of scientific open access journals content. The latest revision (Version 1.4) to JATS was published earlier this year. JATS-Con will bring diverse perspectives to bear on the standard, exploring different tools for working with JATS, JATS workflows, possible future enhancements, and more.
NISO Plus Baltimore attendees will now have their choice of three pre-conferences, including JATS-Con as well as a workshop on AI in scholarly publishing and a session on assessing open access usage for scholarly books. “We are delighted that JATS-Con is returning in person, just in time for our February meeting in Baltimore,” said Jason Griffey, Director of Strategic Initiatives at NISO. “There is of course lots of crossover interest among attendees of the two meetings, and we expect many of them to participate in both events. The week promises to be full of productive conversations on facilitating the flow of information in scholarly communications.”
The JATS-Con call for papers is now open through December 20, 2024. Proposals are welcome from anyone in the information community wishing to explore topics related to the use or non-use of the JATS or an extension such as the Book Interchange Tag Suite (BITS), TaxPub, or the NISO Standards Tag Set (STS). Information on the types of topics covered at past conferences and instructions on how to submit a proposal can be found on the JATS-Con website.
Tickets for JATS-Con, the NISO Plus 2025 in Baltimore meeting, or the NISO Plus Baltimore pre-conferences, are available on our conference registration page.
