Lorcan Dempsey describes his highly informative essay as being "a descriptive overview of some current developments in generative AI, looking broadly." The essay's focus is sectioned into three parts -- "major attention and investment across all domains, rapid continuing evolution of technologies and applications, and social concerns about harmful or undesirable features."
Although lengthy (the system suggests it's a 49 minute read), Dempsey provides a reasonable foundation in the theory of large language models (LLMs) and the relevant vocabulary needed for understanding. A considered "slow read" is recommended.
Dempsey retired in 2022 from his position with OCLC as Vice President for Research and Membership, and Chief Strategist. Named as a Miles Conrad Lecturer by NFAIS in 2004, he continues to be active in the information community as a writer, speaker, and consultant. For more, visit LorcanDempsey.net.
