Peer Review Terminology

Peer review is the process used to assess the validity, quality, and often the originality of articles for publication. Its ultimate purpose is to maintain the integrity of science by filtering out invalid or poor quality articles, as well as make sure research outcomes are exposed to relevant audiences through publication in subject-specific journals. As such, it is a crucial process in scholarly communication and a pillar of the scientific method.
In 2019, STM recognized the need to support the industry in ensuring greater transparency and openness in peer review, which is an essential element of Open Science. This support includes harmonizing and better communicating definitions of discrete elements of these processes, so that members of the community—whether they be authors, reviewers, editors or readers—can quickly and easily recognize how to more productively participate in the creation and qualification of scholarly content. An STM working group developed definitions and best practice recommendations for the communication of peer review processes, now available in its version 2.1 form.
Since last year, a NISO Working Group has been managing further publisher trials of the definitions, with an eye toward finalizing and publishing this material as an ANSI/NISO standard. This work is now nearing completion. Joris van Rossum, STM Director of Research Integrity and chair of the NISO Peer Review Terminology Working Group, will discuss the work and next steps - just ahead of Peer Review Week!

Accelerating Scholarly Communications and Dissemination

Given the rise of remote working and international collaboration, it’s not surprising that so many researchers have expanded their use of applications like Slack, Mastodon, or Zoom. But what is the potential impact on scholarly communications? What are some of the ways in which we can improve dissemination of meaningful work? Do different disciplines require different approaches? How can we enhance discoverability in a world of preprint servers, institutional repositories, etc.? What systems, what resources are most needed? This roundtable discussion offers the opportunity for those supporting researchers in a variety of settings to brainstorm the use of these new communication tools, and to envision what the long-term benefits and drawbacks might be.

The NISO Plus Forum is a new, in-person event that will provide a bridge between the virtual NISO Plus conferences—an opportunity to continue some of the conversations we started at the last conference and connect them to the next one in concrete and meaningful ways. With thanks to the American Geophysical Union (as well as our other sponsors) for their support, this year’s conference will be held at the AGU headquarters in Washington, DC on September 20, 2022. Future Forums will be held in different locations around the world, enabling us to engage more deeply with the global information community.

What do we need in order to build a research environment where streamlined digital access is the norm? Addressing technical debt is one challenge, but what are some of the others? All of us have an interest in furthering the expansion of knowledge, so what innovations, what approaches have the past two years proven to be most effective? What can stakeholders envision for the future? Focusing on both platform technology and the policies that govern those platforms, this virtual event will look at some of the practices and policies that are critical to supporting expanded access and sharing of scholarship.

This NISO educational event will bring together a group of experts in systems and cybersecurity to discuss the key challenges currently facing the information community. From issues of authentication to the threats posed by ransomware, all organizations must prioritize protections for digital identities and assets. Libraries, funding agencies, content and platform providers, and end users are largely aware of the dangers, but hesitate over the potential inconvenience and hidden costs of addressing them. What can be done? This roundtable discussion will provide insights and encouragement.

How can we better ensure that the important work being done in less visible locations or facilities is more discoverable and properly recognized? How can we best leverage the value of preprint services? What networks or platforms are needed?
